Scouts Troop 582 of the Sweetwater District is always looking for opportunities to engage and serve the community. A tenet of the youth movement is to recognize the needs of others and take action, working alongside neighborhoods, volunteer organizations, faith groups and, yes, city governments in the process.

So it was with honor that the Scouts joined Gwinnett County and the City of Lilburn recently to clean up the Camp Creek Greenway Trail and its surrounding areas. The volunteers removed eight bags of trash from the popular green space. The trail cleanup served as an Eagle Project for Dexter Simpson, son of Troop 582 Scoutmaster Dackri Simpson. He organized and executed the successful event with guidance from John Butler, Water Resources Outreach Manager for the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources. Along the way, he even forged ties with the Ladybug Garden Club regarding future projects this year.

For the Trail cleanup and its community service in general, Troop 582 is the City’s March Citizen(s) of the Month.

At 12 Scouts strong, Troop 582 seeks service projects. They have a commitment to the homeless shelter in Atlanta and the Gwinnett County Clean and Beautiful’s Adopt-a-Road program in Loganville, among other activities.

“The cleanup was a fulfilling experience, not only for Dexter, but everyone who participated,” Dackri Simpson said. “Community service is very important to our Troop. I hope that events like the trail cleanup instills a sense of responsibility in our young people for our environment and community. Our Troop, Scout parents and volunteers were excited to help not only our Eagle candidate, the City of Lilburn, too.”

And the City appreciates the gesture.
