The public is invited to learn about and comment on a proposed Tax Allocation District in the City of Lilburn. A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Lilburn City Hall, 76 Main St.
The Council conducted an initial public hearing on Dec. 8 for a revised Tax Allocation District (TAD) Redevelopment Plan and boundary map. A TAD Redevelopment Plan was approved in 2008, but the intended project never came to fruition due to the recession. The proposed new boundary map, which has a much smaller area of focus than the previous map, includes the area on Main Street in Old Town up to the former Jackson Creek Water Treatment Facility at the intersection of US 29 and Indian Trail Road. Learn more.
A TAD allows a community to create an area where new development helps support itself. Future taxes generated by the new development can be used for roads, infrastructure and other public improvements within the district to attract/support development, or to offer direct financial incentives to help make projects financially feasible. Existing property owners within and outside the TAD are unaffected – taxes do NOT increase unless values change. General fund taxes from properties within the TAD continue to be collected at the level that existed when the TAD was created.
The City Council plans to vote on the TAD at the Dec. 16 meeting.
