[ARCHIVED] Residents' favorite lyrics featured in Lilburn art project

Lilburn Lyrics

Take a walk through Lilburn City Park and you just might find yourself humming a familiar tune. A local artist has installed a public art project featuring Lilburn residents' favorite song lyrics.

The City of Lilburn asked residents on social media to submit words from their favorite songs. Local artist Sonny Franks printed these "Lilburn Lyrics" on aluminum signs the size of record albums. They are mounted throughout Lilburn City Park, in hopes that the art will bring to mind a tune or memory.

"As a city, we want to do more than provide municipal services. We want to help people feel connected to the place they call home," Mayor Johnny Crist said. "Music is a universal language that touches people on an emotional level. These signs are a creative way for people to connect with each other as they walk through City Park."

The idea originated with a group of citizens assembled by the Mayor to brainstorm ideas for public art. The group was inspired by a similar project in Macon, Ga. Residents submitted lines from their favorite songs on Facebook and Instagram, and city staff selected lyrics from a variety of musical genres and eras. Franks, who is the owner of Sign Creations, assembled lyrics and graphics in Photoshop and then digitally printed them on scrap aluminum. The "Lilburn Lyrics" were installed on fixtures like trash cans and benches in Lilburn City Park and on the Camp Creek Greenway on May 24, 2016.
