The Lilburn City Council is scheduled to adopt the 2016 millage rate on July 11. The millage rate is proposed to remain the same as last year.
The millage rate is the rate at which property is taxed. One mill equals $1 tax per $1,000 of assessed property value. Taxes are assessed in Georgia based on 40 percent of the real property value, which is determined by the county tax assessor. Taxing authorities, such as the county school board, county government, state government, and municipal government, levy a tax on the assessed property value.
The City of Lilburn’s proposed millage rate is 4.43 mills, the same as 2015. However, the city expects to collect a total of $94,970 more in property taxes, about 5.9 percent more than 2015. This is because assessed property values in Gwinnett County have risen as the economy continues to improve. Because the total amount of taxes collected citywide will increase, the state considers this to be a tax increase. Three public hearings are required.
