The new, expanded playground at Lilburn City Park will open to the public following a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 13 at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and then enjoy the new playground!
In a 2015 citizen survey conducted by the City of Lilburn, more than half of park users expressed a desire for new playground equipment including a toddler area. The renovated playground includes separate areas for younger and older children, brand new equipment, a softer playing surface, and better wheelchair accessibility.
Residents will notice a different style of structures and surface than those used at the former playground. The new equipment provides linear arches, webbing, interactive panels, and climbers that invite creative routing without a designated entry or exit point. Multiple ground level activities and a padded artificial playground grass provide for improved accessibility. The new structures offer greater visibility across the playground and a more artistic element compared to traditional posts, platforms, and bars. The bright colors of the playground equipment reflect those of the city's logo.
The two main structures are designed for specific age groups (2-5+ years and 6-12+ years) according to developmental abilities. Each includes a slide and multiple mental and physical challenges with climbing, balancing, pulling, spinning, bouncing, and jumping opportunities. The large Lunar Burst structure located in the center of the playground allows children to climb up, down, in, and around in any direction and enjoy a birds eye view of Camp Creek and the park lawn. The expanded playground area also features several multi-purpose walls that provide a visible and physical perimeter and can be used for seating.
The new playground was funded by the 2017-2023 SPLOST, the one-cent sales tax approved by voters. Lilburn City Park is located at 76 Main Street. To learn more about the park follow along on Facebook @LilburnCityPark.
